CHAPTER TEN

THERE WASN’T MUCH that Harper loved that was particularly ‘girly’. She loved clothes, of course, and colour. She loved flowers, but more in the way of tending her own on the windowsills of her balcony than receiving overpriced bunches of flowers from a suitor. She didn’t really wear much make-up other than lip gloss and tinted sunscreen. Right now, watching Meghan rifle her manicured nails through racks of outfits, she was wishing herself back into her comfy lab coat. Johnny didn’t care how she looked, and Dominic... She didn’t want to think about Dominic right now.

The fact that he was going to see her in this outfit was the thing freaking her out the most. She was gripping on to the plush fabric sofa in La Debutante as though her life depended on it. Meghan had dragged her out of the lab for this, mid-cleaning frenzy. Something about the owner opening late, just for them. Dominic had already left, but she somehow still felt weird leaving the lab unfinished. Maybe her meds were working better than usual today. The food helped, she guessed. Not that she would admit that to him. He’d seemingly taken it upon himself to bring her lunches, snacks. She’d tried to protest, but it had fallen short of reaching his lofty ears. After the time he brought her favourite sushi, she’d decided to just go with it.

‘What about this one?’ Meg pulled out a gold scrap of fabric that shimmered with every tiny movement.

‘It looks like a disco ball, and look at the size of it!’ She jabbed her finger out. ‘Actually, is that what they cover it in to keep it dust-free?’

‘Funny. You’re full of humour today, aren’t you? You need to pick one. What’s Dom going to be wearing?’

‘I have no idea, and don’t call him Dom.’

‘Why?’ she teased. ‘Does he prefer Dominic, or Dr Dishy?’

‘I’m leaving.’ She stood up, and Meg pushed her back down with a flick of her hand.

‘Don’t you dare! Not without a totally hot dress for the fundraiser. You said yourself you’ve been getting on better.’

‘We’ve been in each other’s pockets. We’ve had to get on better. Can we eat yet? There’s a taco stand around the corner.’

Meghan pointed to her outfit. Today it was a slinky pair of designer jeans and a silk cream top, paired with a high-tower pair of nude heels.

‘There are no tacos for this body. I’ve already got my dress, and it’s not exactly got a lot of forgiveness sewn into the seams.’

‘Fine, I’ll eat yours.’

‘Deal.’ Meghan pulled her over to the racks. ‘Now get in the game and start trying some of these on. We have to look good—it’s only three weeks away.’

What happened over the next hour of Harper’s life felt like a movie. A bad movie, where the hapless geeky girl tries on half a dozen different dresses with some hilarious results. The racks in the boutique store were near depleted, and even Meghan was starting to tire. When she was stressed and trying to be nice, there was a giveaway.
